Your Pet and Someone Small

Your pet is the star of every picture.

The cover

Personalize [Your Pet’s Name] and Someone Small: a pale-blue pet silhouette with a dashed navy outline and the words “Your pic goes here” sits on a round rug at the foot of a tall honey-wood crib in a sage-green nursery, a tiny knitted sock on the rug.

Your pet goes here, with their name on the cover.

Their photo. Their cover.

A customer sent us this photo of Oliver. We made this cover from it.

Oliver, a Boston terrier with a white blaze down his face and a blue collar, lying on a rug and looking up at the camera — the photo his owner sent.
Photo
Goodnight, Oliver: the same Boston terrier painted lying on his side in a plush bed beneath the title lettering, ears up, dark eyes to the reader and a happy open smile — the same white blaze, the same blue collar — one paw over a teddy with a bow in a lamplit bedroom.
Cover

“OMG, it’s so cute! It captures Oliver’s little snaggle tooth perfectly — it looks exactly like him.”

Amanda G., Escalon, CA, Oliver’s owner

The story

The day someone small came home, and the one who kept the quiet.

Add the baby’s first name — or keep them “someone small.”

Your pet is the one who was here first — and for weeks the house has been filling with things that are not for it: a room that smells of new paint, a tall bed with bars, a packed bag by the door. This morning the bag goes, and your pet is alone with the new things — a tiny sock that may be sniffed and not taken. Then the car comes back. Something is set down on the hall runner, and from inside comes a sound like a very small bird. Someone small. From the floor you cannot see in. So there are new rules — quiet, gently, the blanket is not a toy — and every one costs something, and every one is kept. At golden hour someone small cries. Your pet comes, and there is nothing to fix, so it lies down beside the tall bed instead, and the crying stops. At dusk it trades the warm spot by the stove for the cold boards outside the nursery door, and in the lamp light a tiny sock comes down through the bars. Your pet puts its chin down next to it, and stays. The one who could not see in has the biggest job in the house.

Who it’s for: For expecting families and the people buying for them — a baby-shower gift, a first-Christmas gift, or the present for the pet who is about to share the house. The baby is never shown and never given a sex. Add the baby’s first name if it’s chosen, or leave it blank and the story calls them “someone small” — so the book is safe to give before the birth either way. The dedication is written to the small one. Ages 2–6 for the child it is read to, and the pet keeps the exact age, build, and size shown in your photo.

Questions

Is the baby in the pictures?

No — never. The camera stays at your pet’s eye height in every picture: the crib’s rails rise above its head, the car-seat carrier arrives with its hood up and a blanket over it, and your pet hears and smells someone small but never sees them. That is the book’s idea, not a workaround: the whole story happens at the height of the pet who cannot see in. It also means the book is yours before the birth, and nothing in it will be wrong afterwards.

We don’t know the baby’s name yet. Does that matter?

Not at all. Leave the name blank and the story calls the baby “someone small” all the way through — that is how the book was written, and it reads right before the birth and after it. If the name is chosen, add it: it prints on four story pages, on the first page, on the “Who lives here” page, in the imprint, and in our dedication message if you keep it. Either way the cover and title stay “[your pet] and Someone Small,” and the baby is never a he or a she. Once the book is made the name can’t change, so if it isn’t settled yet, leave it blank.

We’re expecting twins. Does it work?

Yes — leave the name blank. The story follows one someone small in one tall bed, so a single name would leave one twin out. Instead, put one twin’s name in the dedication’s “To” box and the other in “And.” The page prints “For Ava and Leo,” and it is theirs together.

Our dog has never lived with a baby. Does the book show them together safely?

It shows what the usual advice asks for, and nothing else. Your pet is never in, on, or climbing the crib, never touches the carrier or the blanket, never carries anything in its mouth near the baby, and whenever it is in the nursery with the small one, someone is in the rocking chair beside it — the book shows that the way it shows every person, with the steaming mug on the little table. It lies on the floor beside the tall bed — beside, and no closer — and the rules it learns are the real ones: quiet, gently, the blanket is not a toy. A parent who knows the guidance will find nothing here to wince at, and a child will learn the same rules without being told them.

We have a cat, not a dog. Does the story still fit?

Yes. Nothing in the story needs a bark or a fetch: the “big noise for the letters” is whatever noise your animal makes, the red ball is nudged or carried, and the rest is lying beside, listening, and staying. Every picture is painted from your photo at your pet’s real age and size. The story needs an animal that lives loose in a house and can get up and down a flight of stairs — a dog, a cat, a rabbit, a ferret — so a fish or a tank-only pet cannot star in this one, nor can a horse, and nor can a bird that flies, because it could perch on the rail and see in, and the whole book is that the hero never does.

What do I get for $69.99?

A 40-page 8.5-inch square hardcover, printed just for you. Your pet is the star of every picture, and their name is on the cover. A page at the front has a note in your own words. A real person checks the book before it prints. Shipping in the U.S. is free. If it arrives damaged, we send a new one for free.

Can I see more than the cover first?

Yes, one page. After the cover, you can see one page from inside the book with your pet in it, free. We paint the rest after you order. A real person checks every picture against your photo before it prints.

What makes a good photo?

One pet, facing the camera, in good light. Daylight near a window is best. The face, colors and markings should be sharp. Skip heavy shadows, busy backgrounds and photos with two pets. A phone photo is fine.

Is the art made with AI?

Yes. We make the pictures with AI from the photo you send. They are not painted by hand. A real person on our team checks every book before it prints.

What happens to my photo?

We keep it, with what you typed and the art we made. That way we can reprint your book if something goes wrong, and make your next book without a new photo. To have it deleted, email support@illustratedyou.com, or ask us to close your account. No public gallery. No ads without asking you first. We don’t train AI on your photos, and we set up the AI services we use so they don’t train their general AI models on them either.
