The story
Their first day home: everything wrong, and one thing right.
The house has been getting ready for days: two bowls by the stove, a basket beside them, and one long argument about the good chair. Then in comes your pet — new to this house and sure this is going to be wonderful. Breakfast goes well. One foot lands in the water bowl. The stairs go up beautifully and down in a heap. There is somebody in the long mirror, and something flat and humming under the hall table that clearly needs following. Through all of it, Pearl — grey, dignified, and here longer than the sofa — watches from somewhere high and says only, “We’ll see.” Until Pearl slips into the little cupboard under the stairs for some peace, the humming thing bumps the door shut, and the newcomer is the only one who stops to listen. A whole day of trying again turns out to be practice. Your pet braces, pushes, and keeps going until the loose latch opens. Pearl comes out, washes one cheek, and spends the evening teaching the newcomer how everything is done: the bowl, the stairs, the mirror, the humming thing. At bedtime she walks past the basket the house had decided on, says “Not there,” and makes room beside the good chair. The basket by the stove stays empty.
Who it’s for: For ages 2–6 and the week a pet who can move freely through the home joins the household — a young animal, an adult rescue, or a much-loved pet changing homes. The artwork keeps the life stage, build, and natural size shown in your photo in every picture, so a grown dog stays grown and may be larger than Pearl.
Questions
Is the bit where Pearl gets shut in the cupboard scary?
No. Pearl is cross, not frightened — she insists she is “choosing to be in here” — the cupboard is dim rather than dark, and the door is open again a few pages later. The tension comes from your pet leaning into a stubborn little door and deciding to try again, and it ends with Pearl washing one cheek.
We already have an older cat or dog at home. Is Pearl painted from them?
No. Pearl is a character in the story — a large, long-haired grey cat drawn the same in every copy — and only the new arrival is painted from your photo.
Our new pet is a rabbit, or a grown-up rescue. Does the first day still work?
Yes. “New” means new to this home, not young. Every picture keeps the age, proportions, and natural scale in your photo, so an adult Labrador remains an adult Labrador and may be larger than Pearl. The action adapts too: one front foot finds the water bowl, the pet follows the humming thing, leans safely into the little door, and rests in the warm place that fits beside the good chair. The story needs an animal that can realistically live loose in a house and get up and down a flight of stairs; a rabbit can star, while a horse, fish, fully aquatic pet, or animal that lives only in a tank cannot.

What makes a good photo?
One pet, facing the camera, in good light. Daylight near a window is best. The face, colors and markings should be sharp. Skip heavy shadows, busy backgrounds and photos with two pets. A phone photo is fine.
Is the art made with AI?
Yes. We make the pictures with AI from the photo you send. They are not painted by hand. A real person on our team checks every book before it prints.
What happens to my photo?
We keep it, with what you typed and the art we made. That way we can reprint your book if something goes wrong, and make your next book without a new photo. To have it deleted, email support@illustratedyou.com, or ask us to close your account. No public gallery. No ads without asking you first. We don’t train AI on your photos, and we set up the AI services we use so they don’t train their general AI models on them either.
